Why WR guru believes Dontayvion Wicks is about to breakout for Eagles

When news broke that Howie Roseman had not only traded for Dontayvion Wicks but also signed him to a one-year extension, it opened the eyes of more than a few fans of the Philadelphia Eagles.

With AJ Brown all but already in a New England Patriots uniform, the Eagles absolutely needed a new X receiver who can take on press and make physical plays down the field, but considering the Green Bay Packers’ willingness to move on from the third-year wide receiver, is it a guarantee that he can be that player?

Well, while drops may have, well, dropped Wicks down the pecking order in Green Bay, that doesn’t mean he won’t succeed in Philadelphia. If anything, a change of scenery could do him wonders, at least in the opinion of wide receiver coach David Robinson, as he explained to NJ.com in an exclusive interview.

“He was really excited to have a new scenery, being in a new offense,” Robinson told NJ.com. “He kind of felt that he could do more in the offense that he was in (with Green Bay). So he’s just happy that he can revamp himself in a new system and prove that he can be that No. 2 or No. 3 receiver.”

So why does Robinson feel he is such a seamless fit in the Eagles’ offense? Well, it’s because he brings an entirely new element to the team’s passing game, creating even more ways Jalen Hurts can attack opposing defenses alongside fellow new additions Makai Lemon and Eli Stowers.

“Dontayvion is going to bring a different element to that Eagles offense when it comes to the intermediate crossing routes, comeback routes, slant routes, and things of that nature,” Robinson said. “He’s really going to help be like a chain mover for those guys. He’s going to be a big-time red-zone threat as well if they use him right. He can really help out in that department.”

Standing 6-foot-1, 206 pounds, Wicks has absolutely outperformed his initial draft stock, starting 18 games as a fifth-round pick out of Virginia. And yet, Brown has some single campaigns where he recorded more yards than Wicks has over his three-year career, making his fit in that role a bit more speculative than a guaranteed replacement. Still, if Robinson is on the money, who knows? Maybe the Eagles will really look like the smartest team in the game by locking him up now on the cheap.
