Why NFL Draft analyst thinks Cam Coleman deserves ‘Jeremiah Smith treatment’

Texas football presents more than quarterback Arch Manning as one who’ll draw NFL scouts in. Prized College Football Transfer Portal transfer from Auburn Cam Coleman sparks hype too. Although one analyst believes the wide receiver deserves “Jeremiah Smith treatment.”

Another words, this draft expert thinks the Texas newcomer belongs in the same category as the high-profile Ohio State star.

Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic ranks Coleman high among his list of draft prospects, which he released Wednesday. He believes Coleman owns way more talent than originally thought.

“In any other year, Coleman would be getting the Jeremiah Smith treatment. No one is as refined as the Ohio State star, but Coleman’s potential as a 6-foot-3, 210-pound, do-everything game-wrecker is tantalizing,” Baumgardner wrote.

Now he believes Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian will unlock him further.

“As he moves from Auburn to Texas, where he’ll play alongside a more talented quarterback (and supporting cast), expectations are rightly sky high,” Baumgardner added.

Coleman now gets the luxury of playing with a more established passer. He caught passes from multiple Tigers quarterbacks before Auburn settled on Stanford transfer Ashton Daniels. Still, Auburn’s offense under then-head coach Hugh Freeze struggled to gain consistency. Now Alex Golesh arrives from USF to reignite a proud program.

The big wideout still delivered 56 receptions, 708 yards and scored five touchdowns. He produced his 100-yard outings in two overtime games against Missouri and Vanderbilt, despite both ending in losses.

Now Coleman adds an intriguing large weapon for the potential first overall pick Manning.
