What Mets’ Francisco Lindor, Carlos Mendoza said about his inexplicable gaffes

On Saturday evening, the New York Mets continued their frustrating 2026 season with a tough home loss to the Athletics by a score of 11-6. The Mets now sit at 7-8 on the year, having already lost their series to the Athletics heading into Sunday’s finale.

Francisco Lindor has been struggling both at the plate and on defense so far this year, including another gaffe on Saturday in which the star made a play on a ball that likely should have been handled by Marcus Semien, resulting in a run for the Athletics.

After the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke on the strange play.

“It’s weird because that’s not him,” said Mendoza, per Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com. “It’s hard to explain. And he’ll be the first one. He’ll tell you that he’s got to be better. But yeah, never seen some of those plays that he’s just out of position at times.”

Lindor himself didn’t have much of an explanation for what has been going wrong for him lately.

“Not sure,” said Lindor. “I feel like I’m locked in. I feel like I’m in the game. It just happens. Got to be better.”

The Mets have now lost four straight games, with fans already calling back to memories of last year, when the team performed well below expectations and missed the playoffs altogether despite having signed star Juan Soto the previous offseason.

Of course, it’s still extremely early in the 2026 season, and Mendoza is confident that Lindor will round back into form.

“He’s the same guy,” Mendoza said. “He shows up. He prepares. He works as hard as anybody. He wants to win. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with who’s in the lineup and who’s not. It’s weird.”

The series finale vs the Athletics is set for Sunday afternoon.
