Watch Sidney Crosby welcome Liam, Markus Ruck to Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins shocked observers this season when they played consistent hockey during the regular season and made the playoffs after failing to earn a spot in the postseason the three previous seasons. The ancient duo of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin led the way to the Penguins’ success.

As well as the Penguins played in 2025-26 before they were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Philadelphia Flyers, there’s little doubt that the team needs an infusion of youth if the Penguins are going to have a chance to compete in the playoffs going forward.

The team made a pair of notable selections in the 2026 draft when they selected twins Liam and Markus Ruck with their first- and second-round picks. The selection of twins on the same team is reminiscent of the Vancouver Canucks selecting the Sedin twins — Daniel and Henrik — with the No. 2 and 3 picks in the 1999 NHL Draft. Those two were eventually elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.

Liam and Markus Ruck don’t come into the league with the same kind of reputation as the Sedins, but both have a chance to be impact players in the NHL.

The twins were welcomed to the Penguins and the NHL by Crosby, one of the greatest players in NHL history. Crosby made a call to both brothers and let them know how excited he was to have them on the Penguins. He confirmed they would go to the team’s development camp for the team’s newcomers and said he would see them at training camp in September.
