Watch Diamondbacks’ No. 1 prospect get called up to MLB

The Arizona Diamondbacks are hoping that the recall of top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt will get them one step closer to catching the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings. The Diamondbacks are two games under .500 and 5.5 games back of first place, and Waldschmidt figures to help their depth in the outfield.

It’s an important moment in Waldschmidt’s career, and the organization’s trajectory, and the Diamondbacks shared the moment when their top prospect found out he was going to play in Arizona.

Arizona designated outfielder Alek Thomas for assignment in a corresponding move, while also reinstating Tyler Locklear from the 10-day injured list and optioning him to AAA. Thomas had just one hit in his last seven games, while owning a .181 average over the course of the season. The Diamondbacks knew it was time to give the team another look in the outfield.

Waldschmidt was the 31st pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He was in the middle of his first season in AAA, owning a .289/.400/.477 slash line with three home runs. He is a bat-first corner outfielder who won’t hurt the Diamondbacks with his fielding, but his best trait is his ability to get on base with his contact hitting.

Waldschmidt has some sneaky power and speed that he hasn’t fully shown yet this season in the minor leagues. Arizona is hopeful that he can continue to develop in the majors instead of keeping him in AAA, and help contribute to the team’s return to being a contender while doing so.
