Browns OL coach gets brutally honest on players who don’t reach out to Joe Thomas

Cleveland Browns offensive line coach George Warhop can’t be much clearer about how he feels about Joe Thomas and current players who don’t pick the Hall of Fame tackle’s brain.

While speaking to the media, Warhop heaped praise on Thomas, whom he coached during his first stint with the team more than a decade ago.

“Joe was the ultimate pro: great work ethic, great study habits, fantastic notes, could watch table,” Warhop said. “I mean, my last couple years here, he and Alex Mack would split the room and watch tape with them so guys could understand how they watch tape. So I think he’s a great resource. And if I’m a lineman here and I’m a tackle here, and I don’t reach out to Joe, I’m a dumbass.”

Despite almost exclusively playing on one of the worst teams in the NFL during his 11-year career, Thomas’ talent was never in question. The third overall pick in the 2007 draft, he earned eight All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowl selections, and was named to the league’s 2010s All-Decade Team before being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Warhop coached Thomas from 2009 to 2013, the latter’s third year in the NFL through his seventh, before moving on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens. When Cleveland hired Todd Monken as its new head coach this offseason, Warhop joined his Baltimore colleague on the Browns staff.

Warhop is tasked with tutoring a line that has not played many snaps together, as Cleveland overhauled the group following a second consecutive losing season.

At Thomas’ old position of left tackle, rookie Spencer Fano, the ninth overall draft pick, has been competing with fourth-year player Dawand Jones.
