Vikings’ Kyler Murray stumbles in QB battle vs. J.J. McCarthy with ugly practice miscues
The Minnesota Vikings are in the midst of a quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy for the starting job, and it’s uncertain who can win as of now. Murray seemed to be in the lead, but after the Vikings’ latest practice, his struggles may have brought him down a notch, according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.
“Since posting this on Friday, Kyler Murray has had a couple of tough practices against the Brian Flores defense. I don’t know that J.J. McCarthy has done enough to overtake him. But we can’t say that Murray has just run away with it,” Seifert wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
As far as McCarthy, he looked good in practice, but there are still some things he has to work on before he takes the leap over Murray.
“McCarthy outperformed Murray on Sunday and on other days. But his consistency — and the efficiency of the offense — still appear to be a work in progress,” Alec Lewis of The Athletic wrote. “Head coach Kevin O’Connell has not yet declared whether Murray or McCarthy will play in the preseason. The current challenge will be deciding on a starter in time for the first-team offense to get more reps and develop a rhythm, even though objective observers could be split on which quarterback has looked better.”
After this latest practice, the Vikings may have to go back to the drawing board and see who they feel is the best option at quarterback. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Murray get the first-team reps because of his overall performance in camp, plus he has the experience edge over McCarthy.
At the same time, if the Vikings are in the business of what have you done for me lately, and McCarthy had the last good practice, he might end up getting the first-team reps for the preseason opener.
