USMNT news: Tony Meola worried about directionless USMNT
With only days remaining till the announcement of the final USMNT squad for the FIFA World Cup, there is plenty of concern about the overall direction of the national team. The USMNT lost both of their recent friendlies in emphatic fashion against the likes of Portugal and Belgium, two of the more seasoned teams when it comes to the World Cup.
And well, Tony Meola has gone ahead and aired his doubts per a post on X by Golazo America. Meola claimed that he could not see the direction in which this team was headed despite the quality in the team.
“We need to figure out who we are because I can’t tell you who the USMNT is right now.”@TMeola1 and @CharlieDavies9 weigh in on the current state of the USMNT a week out from the roster reveal

“Pochettino, he has got some work to do in this group. The last two games that they played, not great. We did see a few signs, but not nearly enough. Not enough to say, man, we are ready to go to the World Cup right now. I think that’s what we want,” he said.
Meola continued, claiming that with only two friendlies remaining before the World Cup, he still coud not tell “who the USMNT is.”
“I can tell you we got some decent players, guys who are performing at their clubs, guys who have played in the Champions League. But if you ask me, what’s the style of the national team right now. Forget formations, I don’t have an idea right now,” he explained.
And well, the concern is understandable. Team USA lost against Portugal 2-0 after goals from Francisco Trincao and Joao Felix. Before that, they lost 5-2 against Belgium in another hapless display.
The national team now has two further friendlies, against the likes of Senegal and Germany, before kickstarting their campaign with a Group D showdown against Paraguay. One of the host nations alongside Mexico and Canada, the USMNT have a relatively easy group with the likes of Australia and Turkey, in addition to Paraguay.
That means that they have a more than a fair chance of reaching the knockout stages, although plenty of improvement will be expected in what is left before the tournament. Mauricio Pochettino will announce the final 26-member squad on May 26, with Tyler Adams expected to continue in his capacity as the captain.
