Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander drops truth bomb ahead of Game 7 vs. Spurs

The Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs will battle for all the marbles at Paycom Center on Saturday in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.

The Thunder failed to finish off the Spurs in Game 6 at Frost Bank Center on Thursday, with Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper outplaying Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jared McCain. Even the return of Jalen Williams from a hamstring injury did not help the defending champions.

Oklahoma City and San Antonio must be sick and tired of each other by now. They have already met 11 times this season, with the Spurs leading the head-to-head, 7-4.

But that does not matter anymore. The only game that counts is the 12th one on Saturday, and its magnitude was not lost on Gilgeous-Alexander when asked about fighting through the physical fatigue and the mental toll.

“I’m good. I’m ready to go. Biggest game of my career, and if I lose, my season’s over,” said the two-time MVP in the media conference after Game 6.

On a personal level, Gilgeous-Alexander should be eager to bounce back after being limited to just 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field, including 0-of-5 from long range, in Game 6.

The Spurs went on a 20-0 run in the third quarter to break the game wide open and bury the Thunder. Coach Mark Daigneault lamented that they were not hungry enough to close out San Antonio.

Oklahoma City, which never tasted the lead, only went 37% from the field, including 25% from three-point distance.

With no more tomorrow and a trip to the NBA Finals on the line, Gilgeous-Alexander would like to take matters into his own hands and further cement his place among the league’s all-time greats.
