Patriots work out ‘Scottish Hammer’ amid injury
The New England Patriots soon will finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the 2026 NFL season. But first must address one notable NFL Injury. Which involved punter Bryce Baringer going down in their last NFL Preseason game.
So the Pats may be calling on the “Scottish Hammer” in this scenario.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo revealed on Thursday who worked out in front of coach Mike Vrabel and company: Jamie “The Scottish Hammer” Gillan. However, there’s a catch.
“No signing today for Gillian but we’ll see what the Patriots decide moving forward. Matt Haack and Bryce Baringer are the punters currently on the roster,” Garafolo said.
So New England is on the fence with luring in Gillian. Plus New England previously signed Haack three days prior to Gillan’s workout.
The 29-year-old Gillan is an easy-to-spot player. He’s renown for his fraying long hair and owns a widely popular nickname. The native of Forres, Scotland spent his last four season playing for the New York Giants, averaging 44.5 yards per punt last season. He hit 46.8 yards per punt during his first season with the franchise in 2022, ranking as his personal best mark.
New England needed to turn to backup quarterback Behren Morton after Baringer left versus the Philadelphia Eagles. The reigning AFC champs trying out a punter signals that Baringer’s ailment is worse than originally thought.
Meanwhile, the Pats have other roster decisions to address. Notably cornerback Christian Gonzalez and his pending contract extension talks. Many analysts believe the All-Pro defender will soon reset the cornerback market.
