Blue Jays agree to contract with former All-Star pitcher amid playoff push

The Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching experience has been a roller coaster of a ride this season. After making it to Game 7 of the World Series, the team added Dylan Cease to their starting rotation. The ex-San Diego Padres star is one of the best starters in baseball. Cease was joined by Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Max Scherzer for much of the season in one of the most star-studded rotations in MLB, but the unit never quite lived up to its potential.

In fact, the Blue Jays made some sellers moves at the trade deadline, which included trading away Gausman, a two-time former All-Star. Toronto didn’t completly blow up the ship, and they added some key pieces, too. One highly-praised move was the trade for Jose Soriano, a young and controllable arm who could still help the team push for the playoffs in a tightly contested American League race, despite the fact that Toronto is currently in last place in the division.

Toronto just made another move for an arm, too. According to Shi Davidi, the Blue Jays signed Michael Lorenzen, an All-Star as recently as 2023. The Blue Jays will be the eighth major league team that Lorenzen has played for. He was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies and then released on Aug. 19. Lorenzen gets a pro-rated portion of the league minimum, and the Rockies are responsible for the remaining $8 million of his salary.

The righty hasn’t been great this season, as he has just a 3-11 record and a 7.08 ERA. Some of that can be blamed on pitching a mile above sea level on a really bad team, though, and the Blue Jays will hope he can rediscover his old self as the team tries to make a run. There is a lot of pitching talent in Toronto, so perhaps they can shock the world, just as they did last year.
