Titans’ Cam Ward apologizes for getting Wan’Dale Robinson killed by Bears, but there’s a silver lining

The Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears practiced together Thursday, and the event turned controversial in the blink of an eye, as so many joint practices do.

Tennessee wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson was going over the middle on a a pass pattern, and when Titans quarterback Cam Ward was somewhat late in delivering his throw, the receiver was in a vulnerable position. As a result, Bears safety Xavier Woods delivered a huge hit on Robinson and the receiver hit the ground hard.

Robinson was able to walk off the field without assistance a few moments later, but Tennessee head coach Robert Saleh called the hit “cheap” and was frustrated by the force of the blow.

Ward met the media after practice and he said that he thought Robinson was fine after the hit and that the Titans wide out would not have to miss time.

He also took the blame for the big hit, admitting he did not give Robinson a good throw. “I have to put him in a better situation,” Ward said. “So that’s really more about me than it is about him. But he’s tough. He got up and he’s good. I have to make sure I don’t put him in that kind of position again.”

Robinson has played four seasons in the NFL, all with the New York Giants. The 5-foot-8, 185-pound pass catcher signed a free-agent contract with the Titans in the offseason and he is expected to become one of Ward’s go-to receivers.

Robinson is coming off back-to-back solid seasons with the Giants. He caught 92 passes for 1,014 yards and 4 touchdowns last season.
