The reason Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama was ‘warned’ by NBA after Game 5

On Tuesday night, the San Antonio Spurs fell behind 3-2 in their Western Conference Finals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5 on the road. This was an ugly game for superstar Victor Wembanyama, who shot just 4-15 from the field, including 0-5 from three, and consistently found himself under pressure by the elite Oklahoma City defense.

After the game, Wembanyama took things from bad to worse when he ditched his postgame media availability, and now, ESPN insider Shams Charania has reported on the league’s reaction to that decision.

“The NBA has warned the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama for violating media access rules. Wembanyama bypassed media obligations after Game 5 on Tuesday night,” reported Charania on X, formerly Twitter.

Wembanyama has had a couple of instances in this postseason where his maturity has come into question, including his elbow to Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round, which earned him an ejection, and now his decision not to answer questions after the worst game of his young playoff career.

Still, all will be forgiven if Wembanyama finds a way to bounce back and force a Game 7 of this series, which was billed as a Herculean battle between the best two teams in the league. While Game 1 certainly lived up to the hype, the teams have traded mostly uncompetitive wins and losses in the games since then, and basketball fans are hoping that Game 6, and a potential Game 7, return to being closely contested down the wire.

For his part, Wemby will likely want to consider stepping inside the arc and putting more pressure on the Thunder around the rim, particularly if the perimeter jumper isn’t falling early on, as was the case in Game 5.

Game 6 is set for Thursday evening back in San Antonio.
