The Odyssey makes Christopher Nolan box office history after passing $1.1 billion landmark

It’s no secret that Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey has been a hit, and it has now made box office history for the director after the movie crossed the $1.1 billion mark.

After its fourth weekend in theaters, The Odyssey eclipsed the $1.1 billion mark at the box office. It has made $1,104,804,890 to date on a $250 million budget.

By hitting that landmark, The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career. It has surpassed the previous record holder, The Dark Knight Rises ($1,085,429,532).

The Odyssey has also become the third movie of his career to make over $1 billion. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both accomplished the same feat. Oppenheimer, his last project, nearly topped that milestone as well, grossing $975 million in 2023.

The Odyssey has been a box office and critical hit for Christopher Nolan

Not only has The Odyssey been a box office hit, but it was also well received among critics and fans alike. The movie currently holds scores of 94% and 97% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.

Of course, The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer’s epic. Nolan directed it, wrote the script, and co-produced the project alongside his wife, Emma Thomas.

The Odyssey follows Odysseus’ (Matt Damon) journey home after the Trojan War. He wants to reunite with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), who is being courted by several suitors, namely Antinous (Robert Pattinson).

It was filmed entirely on IMAX cameras, becoming the first feature film to be. Pre-sales to secure tickets for IMAX showings of The Odyssey were released a year in advance, making it one of the most-anticipated movies of 2026.

More than likely, it will be a big player come awards season. Nolan’s last movie, Oppenheimer, received 13 Oscar nominations in 2024. It won seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Cillian Murphy also won Best Actor for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
