Texas Tech football rumors: How Brendan Sorsby’s gambling scandal will impact NFL Draft stock
The Texas Tech football program thought they had a big-time QB1 on hand when Brendan Sorsby transferred in from Cincinnati. However, the quarterback brought a major gambling scandal with him, and now his future with the Red Raiders is massively in doubt. With his college eligibility up in the air, could the signal-caller bolt for the NFL supplemental draft?
“Should he be ruled ineligible for the 2026 season, Sorsby could apply to enter the NFL supplemental draft but would need to be approved by the June 22 deadline,” ESPN’s Jordan Reid writes. “A team using a supplemental pick forfeits the selection they bid for the standard draft the following year. Many evaluators I talked to were noncommittal about what type of pick they’d bid for Sorsby and preferred to let his process play out, but a few suggested a late Day 3 pick.”
A team utilizing an NFL supplemental draft pick is rare, as Reid points out.
“The NFL hasn’t had a supplemental draft since 2023, and no one has been selected in one since 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals picked safety Jalen Thompson with a fifth-round bid,” he explains.
The Brendan Sorsby gambling scandal puts so much of the QB’s future and the 2026 season for the Texas Tech football team in doubt. Sorsby is under investigation by the NCAA for betting on both college and pro sports. He has entered a residential treatment program for gambling addiction and filed for an injunction against the NCAA to get his eligibility back.
So, until the legal process plays out and we know if it’s even possible for Sorsby to play college football next season, we’ll have to wait and see what he does in regard to the NFL draft.
