While the Washington Commanders tweak their 53-man roster plans, they know the 2026 foundation is built on Jayden Daniels. And here is how facing Daniels’ cat-and-mouse game will make facing the Commanders a hell for opposing defenses.

The Commanders are doing things differently this preseason, according to Sports Illustrated.

“There’s mental and psychological weight being put on the players,” Breer wrote. “The new coordinators are bringing in systems that are more complex and versatile than what Quinn had the last two years, with (David) Blough’s system inspired by Bears coach Ben Johnson and Jones’s based off the Brian Flores scheme he worked in with the Vikings.

“As part of that, the guys on the field have more command over checks and adjustments. And the structure of practice is pushing them and testing whether they know what they’re doing in their positions.”

Commanders should be more difficult to defend in 2026

Given the new approach, game planning for the Commanders’ offense could bring more guesswork. Daniels said he’s learning how to make things harder on opponents.

“It’s not scripted,” Daniels said. “(And) it’s not only me. It’s on the rest of the skill position group to study what we need to study because it’s not scripted. Where you might get the script, and, O.K., you know you’re running these four plays in a row. Now he can call anything, and we all gotta be prepared for it. That’s been the most fun part about it, just seeing where his mind’s going. And he’s trying to play that chess game with Daronte in what he’s gonna call—giving me answers here, giving me a kill here or an alert here.

“It’s been fun to do that. It’s a cat-and-mouse game with our defense, for sure.”

That’s one thing the Commanders lacked last season. Even with Daniels on the field, the offense spun its wheels more often than it glided. But give Daniels more leeway, and the offense could soar.

That’s especially true since the Commanders added Stefon Diggs to the receiver room. Defenses will have to pay more attention to the receivers, and that will give Daniels a chance to audible into favorable situations.

Why that matters is because of the Commanders’ offensive line situation. With standout left tackle Laremy Tunsil on the shelf, possibly for the entire season, there has already been shuffling. And the center position has become a question mark.

Therefore, the Commanders can thrive on anything that gives the offensive line the upper hand because of scheme or deception.

But it’s still the NFL. And trickery only goes so far.

Commanders hoping OC David Blough has the right touch

It’s a use-what-you-have approach by Blough.

“I’d look for Blough to highlight what Daniels is capable of as a passer,” Breer wrote. “You’ll see that in the play-action and keeper game. What might be tougher to pick up is how Blough also plans to leverage Daniels’s football IQ by putting more on him and giving him more command at the line. How Daniels is now working cadence, kills, and checks presnap are evidence that he can more than handle it.

“And, quietly, I get the sense that the staff can’t wait for the football world to see what Daniels is going to be in 2026—especially since a lot of that world seems to have forgotten 2024.”

Commanders fans are desperately hoping for the 2024 offensive success Daniels displayed. But that’s an old story. Daniels must write a new chapter.
