Ohio State football’s Ryan Day ‘frustrated’ by transfer portal madness, but he won’t stay away

With the Ohio State football team preparing for the 2026 season, the program is one of many programs witnessing the evergrowing landscape of the sport, where it’s now possible, in some cases, to go from the NFL back to the collegiate level. As the Ohio State football program prepares to open the season to a hot start, head coach Ryan Day would speak about the current landscape of the transfer portal, which is always a controversial subject.

Speaking to the media on Monday, he was asked about Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright entering the transfer portal and going back to college football, with him joining the LSU Tigers. After pausing and smiling, Day would say that he “told myself I would stop saying that this is crazy…so I’m not going to say that.”

“To think that we’re in a situation where we’re this late in the season, and our rosters are not locked in is frustrating at the very least, but I’m not going to sit here and keep saying that,” Day said, according to Eleven Warriors.

“Whenever I heard that we were in a meeting and someone says, ‘Yeah, LSU just got a commitment from the Browns’ tight end,’ I said, ‘We are certainly in a different world right now,'” Day continued.

For context, Wright is one of a group of players from the Class of 2022 that filed a lawsuit against the NCAA regarding the issue of an extra year of eligibility. A Louisiana state court ruled that these players were to be granted a temporary restraining order, which led him and others to be able to enter the transfer portal and go back to the college level, as Wright is the first to go from the NFL.

Regarding the transfer portal, Day expressed that there should be a date when programs can’t add players, though while that’s not a reality, the coach is “got to do what’s right for Ohio State.”

Subsequently, the Buckeyes are focused on the season ahead as it starts on Sept. 5 against Ball State.
