Rams’ QB2 battle still raging between Ty Simpson, Stetson Bennett

After riding with Jimmy Garoppolo as Matthew Stafford’s primary backup over the past few seasons, the Los Angeles Rams will have a new QB2 in 2026, but who will it be?

In one corner, Stetson Bennett, the “veteran” 28-year-old who is in the final year of his rookie contract with the Rams. While Bennett hasn’t played a single snap of regular season ball for Los Angeles, the Georgia product has been a member of Sean McVay’s scheme for two years now after spending his rookie campaign on the reserve/non-football illness list.

And in the other? Ty Simpson, the heir apparent to Stafford who was controversially selected 13th overall in April’s NFL Draft.

Discussing what he’s seen from his reserves so far this summer, McVay told reporters on Monday that he still isn’t sold on which player will fill that primary reserve role behind Stafford but does have a plan to see both in action on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers, even if the exact allocation hasn’t been scripted out.

“Sean McVay said he has not decided which quarterback will back up Matthew Stafford,” Barshop wrote. “McVay said he is still working out how he will allocate quarterback reps on Thursday but said Ty Simpson will play.”

Over the Rams’ first two preseason games, McVay opted to give each player their own game to show off what they can do, with Simpson attempting 25 passes against the Kansas City Chiefs and Bennett getting his shot to shine against the New Orleans Saints, completing 19 of his 31 passes for 181 yards. Bad news, eventually, one of the two players will need to be named the QB2, but the good news is that the Rams can absolutely keep both Bennett and Simpson in 2026, allowing them to keep developing both arms and have a good Plan B and C if anything goes wrong.
