Falcons rumors: ‘Uneven’ Tua Tagovailoa has left door open for Michael Penix Jr. in QB battle

The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback situation might just be a wide-open race in the final stretch of training camp. With Michael Penix Jr. cleared to participate in 11-on-11 drills after recovering from left knee surgery, rumors suggest he could steal the starting job away from Tua Tagovailoa.

During a guest appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter explains how Tagovailoa has not fully capitalized on his opportunity to win the starting job in Atlanta. With Penix returning, the former Washington Husky seemingly has a chance to emerge as the top quarterback for the Falcons. Especially if he can prove to the organization he is fully healthy.

“It’s an interesting situation,” Schefter said. “Because obviously, it felt like Tua had a real window and a real opportunity to kind of put away the starting job on opening day for Atlanta. And it feels like that hasn’t necessarily happened yet. Michael Penix now has been cleared to participate, for the first time since he injured his knee, in 11-on-11 drills…

“The regular season for the Falcons is just over three weeks away, and it’s a situation where it gives [Penix] time to begin to get acclimated,” Schefter continued. “[The Falcons] can judge how healthy he is, or isn’t, and figure out whether or not he’s physically ready to play on opening day. But Tua hasn’t ran away with that competition. It’s been an uneven summer for him so far.”

The starting quarterback announcement may not come until the last second in Atlanta. As Schefter has pointed out, Tua Tagovailoa has been less than consistent through training camp. Additionally, undrafted free agent Jack Strand has seemingly challenged the 28-year-old quarterback. Now, Michael Penix Jr. is set to return and possibly make a push for the starting job.

Atlanta has one more preseason game on the schedule. The club will face off against the Miami Dolphins on Friday, August 28. However, the Falcons have three weeks until the official campaign begins. So, head coach Kevin Stefanski still has some time to gauge his best options for the regular-season opener.
