Panthers’ Dave Canales gives RB room update that fantasy football managers will hate
The Carolina Panthers are looking to build on the season they had last year that saw them make a playoff appearance, but ultimately lose to the Los Angeles Rams. With most of the same team coming back and some new additions, the Panthers have some good things to build on this season, and the hope is that they can exceed expectations.
The one area where the Panthers exceeded expectations last year was in the running game, as Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard were the two manning the backfield. With Dowdle gone to the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’ll be up to Hubbard to take on the load, but the latest update from head coach Dave Canales says that he’ll have some help.
“Canales: If Chuba is good to go, it will be RB by committee (w/ Brooks) in Week 1,” Joe Person of The Athletic wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Even though that may be good news for Hubbard, that may not be the best news for fantasy owners who expected him to be the bell cow this season. That means at any time, Jonathan Brooks can get in for a drive and might even score a touchdown.
Hubbard’s stock has definitely taken a hit with that news, but the Panthers aren’t playing for fantasy wins; they’re trying to win in real life. After seeing what they were able to accomplish with two backs last season, it makes sense why Canales would go back to the philosophy.
The run game should open a lot of other opportunities for the offense, which is why the Panthers were so successful last season. Bryce Young shouldn’t have a lot on his plate, but he took a big step in his game that let the Panthers reach another level and win the division.
