Lane Kiffin breaks silence on Dae’Quan Wright return to LSU football, other transfer portal madness

Recently, the Cleveland Browns waived rookie tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who will now rejoin the LSU Tigers at the college level. Wright went undrafted this past spring and had also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles organization, but will now be taking his talents back to Baton Rouge to join Lane Kiffin and company.

Now, Kiffin has weighed in on the surprising turn of events.

“Because of the rulings, they are going to play for you or someone else. We made the decision to recruit them. It’s wrong to be critical of these kids. They were granted a fifth year and a judge said they were wronged,” said Kiffin, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

The idea of players looking to become pro, becoming part of a professional team, and then returning to college has been a hot topic in the sports world over the last year, with a similar idea playing out in the college basketball realm.

However, clearly, Kiffin thinks that criticism directed toward the players themselves is misguided.

“These players should have been told that they were going to be eligible for a fifth year. Had they known that, they would have stayed (and not signed pro contracts). You may end up having hundreds of athletes told they have a fifth year. It’s a unique circumstance,” said Kiffin.

Unique is certainly a fair descriptor for some of the scenarios that the college sports world now finds itself facing, but regardless of what fans may think, Wright will now be a member of the Tigers program once again.
