Mina Kimes rips Browns for ‘disrespecting’ fans with Deshaun Watson decision that’s ‘wasting everyone’s time’

The Cleveland Browns had the most intense quarterback competition in the NFL, and Todd Monken’s decision on who he named as QB1 was certainly a divisive one. Cleveland opted to name Deshaun Watson, not Shedeur Sanders, as the team’s Week 1 starter. The Watson decision comes despite the fact that the quarterback just called out the Browns’ fanbase for being disrespectful after they booed him during a horrendous preseason showing.

Watson had just 35 yards on five for 12 passing over four drives against the Buffalo Bills. The former three-time Pro Bowler also had an interception in the 31-7 loss. Watson looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the league early on in his career, especially when he threw for 4,823 yards in 2020. He has done next to nothing since then, though, as injuries, off-the-field issues, and on-field regression have derailed his career. Now, Watson is in the final year of a five-year, $230 million deal, and the Browns hope he will play more than seven games for the first time during his Cleveland tenure.

However, many are calling Monken’s decision a terrible one. The Browns are in a rebuilding state, and it just makes more sense to play an up-and-coming youngster like Sanders than it does to start a regressing QB on an expiring contract, especially one who has seemingly ostracized himself from the fanbase. Mina Kimes is one major critic of the decision.

“An organization that, like its starting QB, does not respect its fans,” Kimes tweeted. “Wasting everyone’s time here.”

Watson’s on-field struggles are likely to continue, and there is a good chance more boos from the fans are inevitable, so it seems unlikely that Watson will last the entire year as the starter. If that is the case, then what is the point in delaying Sanders’ development? Watson is a free agent at season’s end, so it just made more sense to see if Sanders can develop into a starting-level quarterback. Even if he struggled under center, at least the Browns would have peace of mind in drafting a new quarterback next year.
