Dodgers rumors: Mark Walter selling franchise after $12.5 billion Lakers sale would be ‘last resort
After only a little over a year of owning the Los Angeles Lakers, billionaire Mark Walter opted to sell his majority ownership of the team to the duo of Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. While speculation ramped up regarding the reason for the sale amid a federal probe into Mark Walter, one of the more pressing questions was would a potential sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers, his other marquee sports franchise, follow suit.
Well Dodgers fans can rest a little easy as a potential sale does not appear to be on the horizon, as per Melody Gutierrez and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic. During the past week, Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten reiterated that the Lakers sale has absolutely nothing to do with the team, and would not affect Mark Walter’s ownership share in the Chelsea F.C. soccer team.
“Those things don’t go together for a bunch of reasons I’m not going to get into today,” Kasten said. “All I can tell you is what I told you a week ago, the Lakers sale had nothing to do with the Dodgers. It has not impacted the Dodgers and is not going to impact the Dodgers.”
Walter first purchased majority ownership in the Dodgers in 2012. Since then, the team has made five World Series appearances and won three championships, including back-to-back years in 2024 and 2025.
In addition to the Dodgers and Chelsea F.C., the Los Angeles Sparks are also under Walter’s TWG umbrella and it’s been acknowledged that they are not available for sale at the moment as well.
