MLB rumors: If not Jeff Bagwell, Astros will turn to Brewers, Rays, Guardians for Dana Brown replacement
As Dana Brown is out as the Astros’ general manager after being in the role since January of 2023, the team will look to fill the role for the future, though fans wonder if the person for the job will be within the ball club or from elsewhere. While rumors will surround the Astros regarding who is up for the role, this MLB insider will throw a few names and teams out there that could be candidates.
According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, he would mention how it’s “possible” that Houston wants senior advisor and former player Jeff Bagwell to be the next general manager, “if he shows strong interest in the job.” Another member of the team that’s “expected to get a strong look” is assistant general manager Charles Cook, who is “highly regarded” by the Astros.
If Houston looks elsewhere, Nightingale reports that the Astros are “likely trying to hire someone” from such teams as the Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, or the Cleveland Guardians.
Who is taking Dana Brown’s role with the Astros after the decision?
There could be equal feelings of shock and understanding with the move from the Astros to part ways with Brown. While the team is in the midst of a disappointing season, coming off a brutal home stand, losing six of its last nine games, the division standings tell another story.
With Houston first in the AL West with a middling 65-66 record, Houston made the move, as Bagwell and Cook are two of the four people who will be given Brown’s responsibilities.
“Brown’s responsibilities will be transitioned to the Astros’ assistant general managers, Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey and Connor Huff, and to senior advisor Jeff Bagwell. Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations through the transition period as the team continues to focus on the American League West division race,” the statement from the Astros read.
At any rate, Houston looks to keep their top spot in the AL West as the next series starts on Tuesday against the New York Yankees.
