1 stat that proves Josh Sweat’s importance to Cardinals’ pass rush

The Arizona Cardinals received an important defensive boost Monday when edge rusher Josh Sweat was activated from the physically unable to perform list (PUP).

One statistic explains exactly why his return matters. According to NFL Research, only six players have recorded more sacks than Sweat since 2024, including the playoffs: Myles Garrett, Micah Parsons, Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Nik Bonitto, and Brian Burns.

That places Sweat among the NFL’s most productive pass rushers over that stretch and reinforces how much Arizona’s defense relies on his ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks.

Sweat recorded 12 sacks in 17 games last season after spending the first seven years of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. His production gave the Cardinals the reliable edge presence they needed, and his return should immediately strengthen their defensive front.

The Cardinals also removed running back Trey Benson from the roster in a corresponding move.

For Arizona, having Sweat healthy is particularly important in a division featuring several dangerous offenses. A consistent pass rush can force hurried throws, create turnovers and reduce the pressure placed on the secondary. Sweat’s impact extends beyond his sack totals. Opposing offenses must account for him in protection, which can create opportunities for the rest of Arizona’s defensive line.

Still, the sack statistic tells the story better than anything else. When only six players have been more productive at reaching the quarterback over the past two seasons, losing that player is not something a defense can easily overcome.

The Cardinals need Sweat on the field. His activation suggests their most important pass rusher is moving closer to being ready when the games count.
