Tempo’s Nyara Sabally makes WNBA history with stunning stat line
The Toronto Tempo defeated the Chicago Sky 111-104 on Wednesday night, led by a historic performance from Nyara Sabally.
Sabally finished with a career-high 29 points 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting, along with 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in 28 minutes. She also hit 3-of-4 three-point attempts, contributing to Toronto’s 12 made threes. Sabally became the youngest player in WNBA history to record those numbers while shooting at least 75% from the field in a single game.
In her fourth professional season after being selected fifth overall in 2022 and missing 2023 due to knee surgery, Sabally previously had a career-high of 16 points and now averages 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season.
Marina Mabrey added 24 points and 7 assists, shooting 9-of-13 from the field, while also hitting a step-back jumper that helped Toronto push ahead late. Brittney Sykes contributed 20 points, and rookie Kiki Rice posted 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Maria Conde chipped 12 points off the bench, making three three-pointers as part of Toronto’s perimeter production.
The Tempo took control early, leading 55-48 at halftime after shooting 58% from the field. Sabally scored 14 first-half points, while Sykes had 13 and Mabrey 10. Toronto also outrebounded Chicago 21-10 in the first half.
In the third quarter, the Tempo opened with an 11-4 run to extend the margin to 66-52. However, the Sky responded late in the fourth, trimming the deficit to 98-96 with 3:33 remaining. Toronto then answered with an 8-2 run. Mabrey’s jumper made it 101-96, and Sabally followed with a three-pointer to stretch the lead to eight points with 1:43 left, sealing control.
Sydney Taylor led Chicago with 27 points, while Skylar Diggins scored 23 points with 9 assists. Natasha Cloud contributed 18 points and 9 assists for the Sky.
