Sun HC Rachid Meziane to miss Mystics clash with illness

The Connecticut Sun will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time this season when they face the Washington Mystics on Friday night, but the squad will have to take on this task without their head coach. Rachid Meziane is unavailable due to illness, per the team’s public relations X account. Associate HC Roneeka Hodges is filling the post in his absence.

Meziane’s job is already quite difficult without having to battle health issues, as he does his best to lead a roster that consists of largely young players. All-time blocks leader Brittney Griner has loads of experience to offer and can still make an impact on the floor, but she is nearing the end of her Hall of Fame career. Translation: Connecticut is not presently equipped to compete in the WNBA, and unfortunately, that means Mohegan Sun Arena may never again witness playoff basketball.

The Sun will relocate to Houston in 2027, leaving residents with no professional hoops team to emotionally invest in unless the league decides to bring a franchise back to The Nutmeg State at some point in the future. It is unclear what will become of Meziane or the front office when the Houston Comets return to the league. They cannot focus on the unknown right now, however. Connecticut (3-15) will trudge forward and try to salvage this Sunset season.

The Sun (3-15) can escape the W’s basement with a victory. They will keep Rachid Meziane in mind while they square off with the Mystics in Mohegan Sun Arena.
