Steelers rumors: Ian Rapoport responds to Aaron Rodgers ‘private agreement’ question
Breaking news! Free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers is “visiting” the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend! OK, this may not be mind-blowing reporting from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, as most of the pro football world, including the Steelers themselves, all seem to know that Rodgers is heading back to the Steel City for the 2026 season.
That said, what Rapoport did reveal Friday on Good Morning Football is that this whole process is less about a secret agreement between the QB and team and more about Rodgers being Rodgers.
“Because it’s Aaron Rodgers, it’s really hard to speak in certainty,” Rapoport said in response to Kyle Brandt’s question about an agreement already in place between Rodgers and the Steelers. “My sense is, Rodgers assumed he was going to be back. The Steelers have assumed he was going to be back. I don’t believe there was an agreement, because when you talk to people with the Steelers, they still say, ‘We don’t know.’ ‘We haven’t heard.’ ‘It’s unclear.’ ‘Until he signs, we’re not sure.’ So, I don’t get the sense there was like a private agreement.”

While we don’t know exactly where Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers stand with training camp still over two months away, what we do know is that the QB hasn’t announced his retirement, despite the fact that he’ll turn 43 midway through next season.
And as for the Steelers with their new coach (and Rodgers old coach), Mike McCarthy, they haven’t made any significant moves to address the quarterback position. The current QBs on the depth chart are Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and 2026 third-round pick Drew Allar. That means if, for some reason, Rodgers doesn’t return, the team is in trouble next season.
