Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama makes history with block streak last seen in 2001

Victor Wembanyama is truly a special player. No 7’5 player should be able to move the way he does on the court, and yet here he is. His rare combination of height, mobility, and instincts already makes him the best rim protector in the league. In his first foray into the NBA playoffs, Wembanyama is already showing that his shot-blocking isn’t just a regular-season thing.

Against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wembanyama continued his dominant shot-blocking streak from the first round. With just three minutes left in the third quarter, the Spurs center has already recorded 11 blocks. Wembanyama is now the first player to record 6 or more blocks in three straight playoff games since 2001, when then-Dallas Mavericks center Shawn Bradley did the same thing, per ESPN.

Wembanyama’s last two games against the Trail Blazers were a defensive masterclass. The Spurs center had seven blocks in Game 4 in his return from a concussion. He followed that up with a 6-block performance in the close-out Game 5 to send San Antonio to the second round of the 2026 playoffs.

Wembanyama has played in just four playoff games in his career, and yet he’s already made a massive impact on his team. He’s averaging 21 points per game on ridiculously efficient shooting (58.3% from the field and 53.8% from deep), along with 8.8 rebounds and a whopping four blocks per game. Wembanyama’s first playoff game is already a massive success for the team.

The Spurs are hoping to set the tone in the second round and win the first game of their series against the Timberwolves. While Wembanyama has been spectacular defensively, his offense has been nonexistent. He’s scored just eight points, though he’s got five assists and 11 boards, at least. The Timberwolves are up 90-86 at the halfway point of the final frame.
