Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama joins exclusive LeBron James club by reaching NBA Finals
The San Antonio Spurs are back in the NBA Finals, after surviving a thrilling seven-game series with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama is joining an exclusive club, as he made it to his very first finals.
Wembanyama is one of three NBA players to make the finals and All-NBA First Team by the age of 22, league reporter Nate Duncan posted to X, formerly Twitter.
The other two NBA players to ever do that are LeBron James and Max Zaslofsky. James made his first Finals in 2007, while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has of course gone on to an incredible career.
Zaslofsky accomplished that feat while playing for a team called the Chicago Stags, in 1947. He finished his NBA career with nearly 8,000 points.
Victor Wembanyama is ready to lead his Spurs to the NBA Finals
The Spurs now move on to the NBA Finals, for the first time with Wembanyama on the roster. San Antonio will go on to play the New York Knicks, in a rematch from the 1999 NBA Finals.
Wembanyama is very excited for this next battle.
“Winning the Larry O’Brien, it’s a childhood dream,” Wembanyama said, per ESPN. “Having a real shot at it, having a chance, tangible chance at winning it, realizing a dream. … The day we win it, speaking for myself, it’s going to be an amazing day of a realization of a dream. It’s hard to put into words. It’s almost like the meaning of my life.”
The Spurs center has had a special postseason. He scored 22 points in Game 7 against Oklahoma City.
“He has such a vision, in my opinion, of who he wants to be as a person and a player,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Wembanyama. “The commitment and investment he puts in that vision is like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”
Game 1 of the NBA Finals is in San Antonio on Wednesday night.
