Eagles’ release running back after strong preseason game vs. Bengals

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly letting go of running back Carson Steele, even though he played well in the team’s preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Eagles plan to release Steele as they finalize their 53-man roster. Schultz posted on X that Philadelphia will let go of the former undrafted free agent. He also pointed out Steele’s strong game against Cincinnati, where he had eight catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles lost their preseason finale 30-13 to the Bengals on Friday night, but Steele was one of the team’s bright spots. He showed his versatility by making plays as both a runner and a receiver as the regular season neared.

Steele ended the game with 24 rushing yards on eight carries and caught eight passes for 52 yards. He also scored on a five-yard touchdown catch from veteran quarterback Andy Dalton.

Steele’s performance stood out because he spent the offseason fighting for a spot in a crowded Eagles running back group. Saquon Barkley is still the clear starter, while Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley are also competing for backup roles.

Even with his strong game against Cincinnati, Steele did not make Philadelphia’s initial 53-man roster. If he clears waivers, the Eagles could still bring him back on the practice squad.

The decision on Steele is surprising, considering how well he finished the preseason. His showing against the Bengals might also catch the attention of other teams needing running back depth.

As the Eagles get ready for the regular season, they still have several key roster decisions ahead. Steele’s release is one of the bigger stories after Friday’s preseason finale.
