Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire makes honest admission about Thomas Castellanos addition

The Texas Tech Red Raiders added a quarterback to the roster at the last minute after signing Thomas Castellanos in the transfer portal. On Saturday, head coach Joey McGuire opened up about bringing Castellanos onto the roster and what kind of role the fifth-year senior could play this season.

McGuire admitted that his goal this offseason was to enter the 2026-27 campaign with six quarterbacks on the roster, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. The 55-year-old claimed that he believes Castallenos’ athleticism and experience are something that can help expand the Red Raiders’ offense.

“It has been our intention since this past December to carry six quarterbacks on our roster this season,” McGuire said. “With Tommy, we have an experienced quarterback who we believe can come in and help us win games, if needed. His athleticism is also a great trait and will let us continue to expand our offense.”

That means Castellanos could have some designed packages in the offense this season, as Will Hammond will serve as the starting quarterback for Texas Tech. So if Thomas Castellanos gets some looks, his playing time could be sporadic.

Castellanos joins Texas Tech with four years of college experience under his belt. He began his collegiate career with the UCF Knights. He then transferred to Boston College, where he played for two seasons before transferring to Florida State for the 2025-26 season.

Thomas Castellanos ended last year with 2.760 passing yards (career-high), 557 rushing yards, and 24 total touchdowns (15 passing, 9 rushing). His dual-threat ability could provide a big boost to Texas Tech’s run game this year.
