Spurs rumors: The sneaky center drawing attention with 20th pick in NBA Draft
The San Antonio Spurs have been the surprise of the NBA this season without question, and they still sit just four wins from a championship even with their backs against the wall in the NBA Finals. While the Spurs were strong enough to take out the defensive champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the New York Knicks have been able to expose some of their flaws in the first two games of the championship series.
One of those flaws that the Spurs clearly need to address this offseason is the lack of size and strength that they have around Victor Wembanyama. Wemby’s size and length is a huge asset on the inside, but his strength isn’t, well, a strength at this time.
That leaves free agency and the NBA Draft to address that hole this offseason. San Antonio is picking No. 20 in this month’s NBA Draft thanks to a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, and ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel has them taking Houston center Chris Cenac Jr.
“Sources say San Antonio is looking at a few different players in this spot already, with Cenac, (Allen) Graves, and Dailyn Swain frequently mentioned,” Siegel wrote. “Whether or not Cenac has already privately worked out for the Spurs is unknown, but if it hasn’t happened yet, it will. Keep an eye on him rising in the top 20 before the draft.”
Cenac played just one season in college after joining the Cougars as a five-star recruit, and he improved immensely during his lone season under Kelvin Sampson. He averaged 9.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in 37 games as a freshman.
Cenac has great length and strength on the inside, even if he needs to get a little bit more polished from a skill perspective. He is extremely raw offensively, but has shown decent shooting touch that gives him some potential to improve. He makes his hay defensively, which would help him fit right in with a Spurs team that is already excellent on that end of the floor.
All in all, Cenac would be a great fit in San Antonio. If he falls to No. 20, son’t be surprised to see the Spurs scoop him up.
