Spurs’ Mason Plumlee has foul on Jared McCain upgraded to a Flagrant 1
The San Antonio Spurs fell behind 2-3 in their Western Conference Finals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night with an ugly Game 5 loss. The Thunder were in control of this one for most of the way, and the Spurs will now be playing for their playoff lives on Thursday evening at home.
Late in this game, a bit of controversy occurred when Spurs backup center Mason Plumlee, who was in the game due to it being garbage time, was whistled for a hard foul on Thunder guard Jared McCain.
Now, the league has stepped in with a retroactive ruling on the play.
“UPDATE: Mason Plumlee’s shoulder to the back of Jared McCain at the 1:39 mark of the 4th quarter in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between the Spurs and Thunder has been upgraded to a Flagrant 1 after a league review,” reported ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.
The play occurred when McCain was standing in between Plumlee and Alex Caruso, who he was chasing around a screen. At that point, Plumlee put his elbow into McCain’s lower back, sending the much smaller player falling to the ground, and drawing some boos from the crowd in Oklahoma City.
Thankfully, no suspensions or additional punishments were handed down for the play, and Plumlee doesn’t necessarily figure to be a part of the Spurs’ plans moving forward in this series, unless they find themselves in another blowout situation.
The Spurs came out flat on Tuesday night, and will hope that the home crowd will give them the boost they need on Thursday to tie this series up and send things back to Oklahoma City for a decisive Game 7.
