Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald issues All-Pro challenge to rookie trying to make roster

The Seattle Seahawks squandered a 13-point lead and bowed to the Tennessee Titans in their preseason clash, 19-16, at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. It was the second defeat of the Seahawks after losing to the Dallas Cowboys, 17-7, in their preseason opener at Lumen Field last week.

Still, there were plenty of positives to take from their loss to the Titans. One of them was the notable performance of Emmanuel Henderson Jr. While the rookie receiver only had one catch for seven yards, he showed his versatility as a member of the special teams.

The Seahawks drafted Henderson in the sixth round, and his chance to make the 53-man roster remains uncertain. Coach Mike Macdonald, however, already sees a lot of potential in the unheralded newcomer after playing against the Titans, as reported by Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.

“That’s the stuff that really popped and gets you excited from his college tape, the return game. He should be trying to be an All-Pro returner too. He should be thinking of being a great receiver in our league as well,” said Macdonald.

He stressed that the 23-year-old Henderson should not limit himself as a guy on the special teams. Henderson was named to the All-Big 12 First Team in his one-and-done stint at Kansas, so he can definitely be a key player when given ample touches.

With the Seahawks, he is not pressured to perform right away, which should serve him well as he tries to navigate the rigors of the NFL.

Henderson will have to continue to fight for his spot in an already loaded receiving unit, which features Cooper Kupp, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed, Tory Horton, and Montorie Foster Jr.
