Phillies star Kyle Schwarber’s monster walk-off home run makes history vs. Cardinals

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber played the hero in one of the franchise’s most dramatic wins of the season on Sunday, crushing a 459-foot walk-off home run to complete a 6-4 comeback against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia entered the ninth inning trailing 4-0 after being held scoreless through the first eight frames. Cristopher Sanchez surrendered four runs across 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven, while St. Louis starter Kyle Leahy allowed only two hits and struck out four over four scoreless innings before departing after 63 pitches.

The Phillies finally broke through in the ninth. Bryce Harper opened the inning with his second double of the game, but Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien recorded two outs before Philadelphia mounted its rally. JT Realmuto then singled, and Justin Crawford drew a walk to fill the bases.

Edmundo Sosa followed with a three-run double down the left-field line, cutting St. Louis’ advantage to 4-3. Bryan De La Cruz then brought Sosa home with a run-scoring single, pulling the Phillies even at 4-4.

With two outs, Schwarber stepped in against O’Brien and attacked a 2-2 sinker. The 33-year-old sent the pitch an estimated 459 feet to center field, clearing the batter’s eye and ending the game. The blast was Schwarber’s major league-leading 39th home run of the season.

Schwarber’s blast ended Philadelphia’s longest walk-off home run drought in MLB. The Phillies had gone without a walk-off homer since Schwarber hit one against the Dodgers on June 9, 2023. His 459-foot shot ranks tied for the fifth-longest walk-off homer tracked by Statcast since 2015.

The historic comeback also produced several milestones for Philadelphia. The Phillies had not previously won a game after trailing by at least four runs in the ninth inning and reaching their final out since April 13, 1983, when they defeated the New York Mets 10-9 after falling behind 9-5.

The victory extended Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine games and completed its third consecutive series sweep. The Phillies also moved within 2.5 games of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and remained second in the Wild Card standings, 1.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the top spot.
