Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong makes franchise history with home run in rout of Mariners

Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong helped lead his team to a 19-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. His performance helped Chicago avoid a three-game sweep while producing 17 hits and four home runs.

Crow-Armstrong launched his team-leading 33rd homer of the season in the eighth inning, then added his 32nd stolen base. The combination gave him six games this season with both a home run and stolen base, which ranks second for a Cubs player in a season since the modern stolen-base rule was adopted in 1898. Only Ryne Sandberg’s seven such games in 1991 are ahead of Crow-Armstrong.

The 33rd homer also came as Crow-Armstrong continued a major run in the franchise history. He has already become the first Chicago player to record consecutive 30-30 seasons, and the combination of 33 home runs and 32 stolen bases leaves him in position to potentially reach 40-40 for the first time in his career.

The Cubs offensive outburst extended well beyond Crow-Armstrong. Michael Conforto opened the scoring with his 11th homer of the season on a leadoff shot in the third inning. Ian Happ and Pedro Ramirez each produced a grand slam and five RBI, while Happ’s grand slam was his 22nd home run of the year.

Seattle starter Bryce Miller was unable to contain Chicago, issuing a career-high seven walks. The Cubs also scored on an Alex Bregman fielder’s choice in the fifth inning before adding eight runs in the eighth.

The victory moved Chicago to 75-56 and preserved its 4½-game advantage in the NL wild-card race.
