Arsenal told exactly how much money is needed to beat Barcelona to Julian Alvarez signing

Arsenal have been told they will have a clear run at signing Julian Alvarez if they meet Atletico Madrid’s asking price.

A move to Barcelona this summer has also been ruled out for Alvarez by European football journalist Andy Brassell.

The Argentina forward has made no secret of his desire to join the LaLiga champions.

However, Barca are unable to meet his current club’s valuation, leaving Alvarez’s future uncertain.

Alvarez’s uncertain future

Having been left out of Atletico’s opening match of the season against Malaga, he returned to the squad on Sunday.

Alvarez played 24 minutes off the bench in a 2-2 draw at home to Villarreal.

He was met with a hostile reception from the crowd, though, as fans jeered his entrance before ordering him down the tunnel at half-time.

Their reaction has added further question marks over whether Alvarez will remain an Atletico player beyond the transfer deadline.

talkSPORT revealed on Saturday that Arsenal are actively exploring a potential deal for the 26-year-old.

Brassell has now explained it would take a bid of £150million to make the move happen, if Alvarez can be convinced to move to north London.

What will it take for Arsenal to sign Alvarez?

Appearing on the Trans Europe Express, he said: “I think it’s possible he stays beyond the transfer deadline because Barcelona just can’t make that offer. It’s not possible for them to do that.

“Atletico aren’t going to go, ‘oh, this is slightly unpleasant. Let’s take a £50million discount.’ That’s not going to happen.

“The only small possibility I think of him going somewhere before the deadline is if Arsenal come back to the table and if Arsenal make the sort of bid that a Premier League team can make.

“It does feel that if an acceptable bid was made, and we’re talking €150million (£128m) – remember this is what they turned down from Real Madrid, so you’re probably looking towards £150million.

“Then, maybe the door opens. Then, maybe Alvarez who wasn’t interested in Arsenal as he only wanted Barcelona countenances that.”

Alvarez has four years remaining on his current Atletico deal after joining the club from Manchester City in 2024.

He has since scored 49 goals in 107 appearances for the Spanish giants.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have already spent over £200million this summer.

Last week’s £55million addition of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa saw him join fellow new recruits Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis.

Mikel Arteta has also made Piero Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent for £45million.
