Royals’ Maikel Garcia exits Rangers game with hamstring injury

Losers of five in a row, the Kansas City Royals are plummeting down the AL Central standings. Saturday afternoon’s 7-6 defeat to the Texas Rangers ensured the Royals’ second straight series loss. However, Saturday’s loss stings even more due to the loss of third baseman Maikel Garcia. According to multiple sources on X (formerly Twitter), including Kansas City’s official team account, Garcia left due to a right hamstring strain.

“Maikel Garcia exited today’s game with a right hamstring strain,” posted the team’s official account Saturday evening.

Coming off the best season of his career, Garcia has blossomed into one of MLB’s best third basemen. Teaming up with superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., the duo is one of the best left sides of the infield in baseball. Before leaving the loss to Texas Saturday, Garcia was hitting .268 with three homers and 21 RBI, to go along with four steals. Although he hasn’t been as dynamic on the basepaths as in the past three seasons, Garcia is still a key piece of the Royals’ starting nine.

Now, the Royals hope that Garcia will miss as little time as possible. The third baseman drove in a run in Saturday’s defeat, teaming up with Witt Jr. in addition to top of the order teammates Carter Jensen and Vinnie Pasquantino to knock in all six of Kansas City’s runs. The Royals will now look to climb up the AL Central standings without Garcia for the time being. Sunday’s series finale against the Rangers feels like a key moment in Kansas City’s season. Can they improve on this season’s form without their star third baseman? If so, Garcia’s return could be the key to an October return.
