Rory McIlroy’s emotional thank you to parents at Masters Green Jacket ceremony

There are plenty of reasons why Rory McIlroy’s second Masters championship was different than his first Augusta triumph. There was no catastrophic shot into Rae’s Creek on 13, no missed putt on 16, and no sudden-death playoff to win. But most importantly, McIlroy’s parents were at the Masters this year to watch their son, unlike in 2025. That led to an emotional moment during the Green Jacket ceremony.

“They weren’t here last year to celebrate with us and surprisingly, I had to convince them to come this year. Because they thought the reason that I won was because they weren’t here,” McIlroy said. “So I’m glad that we proved that wrong. But Mom and Dad, I owe everything to you,” McIlroy said through tears as the Augusta crowd cheered. “You’re the most wonderful parents, and if I can be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.”

McIlroy was raised in Hollywood, Northern Ireland, just outside of Belfast. An only child, both of his parents worked multiple jobs to support Rory’s budding junior golf career. Now, a six-time major champion and two-time Masters winner, it’s safe to say that paid off. Throughout the broadcast, CBS showed Hollywood Golf Club, one of many places of employment for Gerry McIlroy, bursting with cheers at their hometown kid’s greatest shots.

McIlroy is on a quest to be the greatest European golfer who has ever lived. He has the second-most major championships, tied with Nick Faldo and behind Harry Vardon. He is the only European to win the Career Grand Slam, which he achieved last year.

But what made McIlroy emotional on the podium Sunday was not the golf. It was being a son and a dad, trying to be the best he can be at those two titles.
