Reds’ Hunter Greene lands on IL with elbow injury

Cincinnati Reds star pitcher Hunter Greene was placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday due to right elbow soreness, the team announced. Greene, who is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, missed the first few months of the season due to an injury as well. He has made five starts since returning, and an update on his timeline for a return after this latest injury has not been revealed.

In a corresponding move, the Reds recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Mey from Triple-A.

Greene was mentioned as a potential trade candidate before the deadline on Monday. He obviously was not moved, however.

The Reds still believe that Chase Burns — who is in the middle of a breakout season — and Greene can lead the starting rotation for years to come. Greene is trying to find a way to avoid the injury bug, though. Injuries have been a concern for him over the years.

The 2024 All-Star has made 25 or more starts just once in his big league career. Greene is a star without question, but the Reds need him to be on the mound. He is under team control through 2028 and he has a club option for the 2029 campaign, so the Reds certainly can be patient when it comes to the idea of trading him.

Updates on Hunter Greene’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. Meanwhile, the Reds are set to host the Athletics on Wednesday night at 6:40 PM ET in Cincinnati.
