Gonzaga adds 15.8 PPG scorer in transfer portal after court ruling

Amid the NCAA’s new eligibility rule granting student athletes five years of eligibility, a recent court ruling extended that rule to players who just recently completed their fourth year of college athletics, giving them one more season for 2026-27. The Gonzaga Bulldogs, who have needed help in the backcourt, landed one of those players via the transfer portal in guard Javon Bennett, as per Joe Tipton of On3.

With Javon Bennett’s commitment, that brings Gonzaga’s transfer portal additions this offseason to three. Earlier this summer, the Zags landed big man Massamba Diop from Arizona State and guard Isiah Harwell from Houston.

Gonzaga was thrown for a loop last month when sophomore guard Mario Saint-Supery opted to sign a professional contract in Spain, leaving the program without a true point guard on the roster. That’s where Bennett comes into play. He was one of the better point guards in the nation this past season at Dayton.

He appeared in 37 games at a little over 34 minutes per game in what was originally supposed to be his final season of college basketball. Instead with the ruling, he has one more year to play. He averaged a career-best 15.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals with splits of 39.5 percent shooting from the field, 34.7 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 89.8 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Bennett began his college basketball career at Merrimack in 2022-23 before transferring to Dayton ahead of his sophomore year. He’s played the last three season with the Flyers. This past year, he was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team.
