Falcons’ Bijan Robinson reveals immediate Matthew McConaughey text after contract extension

Almost immediately after Atlanta Falcons star Bijan Robinson signed a contract extension, he received a text from Texas Longhorns football superfan Matthew McConaughey.

Speaking to reporters after putting ink to paper on his new contract, Robinson revealed the Dazed and Confused actor texted him to congratulate him.

“There’s been some cool people, but as soon as the news hit, Matthew McConaughey hit me as soon as it hit. I think it hit at like 7:56, [and at] 7:58, he texted me,” Robinson revealed. “But yeah, a lot of awesome — really cool people texted me, but it was cool to see him [text] as soon as it hit. He was the first one, so that was cool.”

Bijan Robinson’s record contract extension with the Falcons

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, Robinson signed a historic contract extension. He became the highest-paid running back in NFL history with his three-year, $66.75 million contract.

The deal includes up to $8.25 million in incentives, making the contract’s maximum value $75 million. Robinson’s new contract also includes $51 million guaranteed and $37 million at signing.

This comes as Robinson heads into his fourth year in the NFL. He was selected with the eighth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas. He has made two Pro Bowls and has been named to two All-Pro (one First-team and one Second-team) teams.

His best season was in 2024. Robinson rushed for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 61 passes for 431 yards and one touchdown that season.

In total, Robinson has rushed for 3,910 yards and 25 touchdowns in three seasons. Additionally, he has caught a total of 198 passes for 1,738 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Falcons are coming off a disappointing 8-9 season. Atlanta has failed to win more than eight games in a single season since Robinson’s arrival in 2023. With Kevin Stefanski now as the team’s head coach in 2026 after a six-year stint with the Cleveland Browns as their coach, the Falcons are hoping to make it to the playoffs.
