Manchester United consider World Cup star if £60m bid for Lewis Hall is rejected by Newcastle

Manchester United could consider a move for Antonee Robinson if they are unsuccessful in their bid to sign Lewis Hall, talkSPORT understands.

The Red Devils are keen to strengthen at left-back this summer, with Newcastle defender Hall their no.1 target.

Michael Carrick is short of options on the left side of defence, with Luke Shaw their only senior player that is a specialist in the role.

And with Champions League football returning to Old Trafford this season, United will need a bigger squad to rotate, making this position a priority area.

Top of their wishlist has been Hall, who has earned a strong reputation at Newcastle since joining the club in 2024.

talkSPORT has long reported United’s interest in the England international, who was left out of Thomas Tuchel‘s World Cup squad.

But with Newcastle suffering a stream of high-profile exits this summer, they could decide to put their foot down with Hall.

As well as the departure of long-term boss Eddie Howe, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have left for Barcelona and Tottenham respectively for a combined £170million, while captain Bruno Guimaraes is on the brink of joining Arsenal in a £75m deal.

Hall obstacles outlined

While United remain keen on Hall, talkSPORT’s Chief Football Correspondent Alex Crook has revealed they could turn their attention to Fulham left-back Robinson if they are unable to land their No.1 target.

Robinson has been a mainstay for the Cottagers since their promotion to the Premier League in 2022, and impressed for the USA at this summer’s World Cup, starting four of their five games.

Outlining the Red Devil’s stance, Crook told talkSPORT: “United’s interest remains.

“We’re told they’re willing to pay up to £60million to prise Hall away from the North East.

“But having already made £70million for Gordon, £100million for Tonali and now £75million for Guimaraes, there’s no real financial pressure on Newcastle.

“And you wonder if the hierarchy there might see this Lewis Hall situation as a chance to make a statement – ‘The shop window is closed, we’re not selling any more of our star players’.”

The American dream?

With Hall looking an increasingly difficult transfer for United to pull off, Crook was quick to highlight Robinson as a potential alternative.

Known for his pace in defence and attack, the 28-year-old has been a dependable presence at Fulham since joining from Wigan in 2020.

After helping the Whites to Premier League promotion in 2022, he has gone on to make 158 top-flight appearances, scoring once and providing 17 assists in the competition.

Crook continued: “Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international.

“Their experienced Premier League campaigner would probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall. He’s someone I’m told is on Manchester United‘s radar as well.”

Outlining the challenges behind signing Hall, he added: “Certainly I think it’s going to be a difficult deal for Manchester United to do. 

“What the Red Devils have by way of alternatives – Harry Amass has had a pretty decent pre-season, but the vibe coming out of Old Trafford is still that he will be allowed to leave on loan, leaving Luke Shaw really as the only first choice left back.

“They’ve got [Patrick] Dorgu as well, but he seems better suited higher up the pitch.
