Mike Trout gives Angels a shoutout for trade deadline performance

The Los Angeles Angels received public support from Mike Trout after completing their clearest deadline selloff in years. The club entered Wednesday at 43-70, last in the American League West and 15 games behind first place, leaving little reason to preserve a roster without a realistic postseason path.

Interim general manager John Mozeliak traded Jose Soriano, Jo Adell, Ryan Zeferjahn, Kirby Yates, and Brent Suter on Monday, bringing eight prospects into an organization that needed more young talent. The moves marked a notable shift for a franchise that had repeatedly avoided a full teardown, even while its farm system lacked impact position-player depth. That approach changed with Monday’s series of deals. Trout publicly supported the new course.

MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger shared the three-time AL MVP’s reaction Wednesday in a post on X, formerly Twitter, as the organization continues to reshape their future after the deadline.

“We gotta look at ourselves in the mirror. We’re not where we want to be. I think the best step in the best direction to turn things around is to do what we did.”

The trades brought shortstop Arjun Nimmala, catcher Moises Ballesteros, catcher Jacob Cozart, and infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. to the Angels. Nimmala immediately became the organization’s No. 2 prospect, while Ballesteros had previously earned Top 100 prospect recognition.

Los Angeles also acquired outfielder Eddie Micheletti Jr., right-hander Angel Rivero, right-hander Mason McGwire, and right-hander Kyle Robinson. An earlier deal that sent Logan O’Hoppe and Chase Silseth to the Texas Rangers brought infielder Angel Arredondo into the system.

The Angels retained Zach Neto and Reid Detmers despite trade interest. Rather than deal every established player, Mozeliak added young talent around the controllable pieces already on the major league roster.

Trout’s backing carries weight. He remains the face of the franchise and controls his future through a full no-trade clause. His comments offered public support for a rebuild that finally gave the Angels a clear direction after years of uncertainty.
