Red Sox OF Roman Anthony leaves road trip with wrist injury to see specialist
The Boston Red Sox season has gotten off to a miserable start. The team is 14-21, and in last place of the American League East, 10 games back of the New York Yankees. Several Red Sox stars have underperformed, but the injury bug has always hit the clubhouse hard.
Days after placing ace starting pitcher Garrett Crochet on the 15-day injured list, outfielder Roman Anthony left the team on its road trip to Detroit. He flew back to Boston to see a specialist for a wrist injury sustained on Monday, per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
During his first at-bat against the Tigers, Anthony fouled a pitch off. He was seen wincing in pain and flexing his wrist, but finished the at-bat, grounding into a fielder’s choice. He was then removed the game after the inning.
Afterward, the Red Sox star outfielder underwent X-rays that reportedly came back negative. At this point, the bigger concern might be any potential ligament damage in the wrist.
It is unknown whether he will require a stint on the injured list as of yet.
But injuries for Boston continue to pile up.
Along with Crochet, offseason acquisition Sonny Gray has missed his last couple of starts due to a hamstring injury. He threw a bullpen session on Monday, providing hope that is return may be imminent. It sure is needed, though.
The Red Sox’s number-three starter, Ranger Suarez, left Sunday’s start against the Houston Astros with a hamstring injury.
The team’s early-season struggles already led to most of the coaching staff being fired. If things do not somehow turn around quickly, the season may be lost before the calendar flips to June.
