Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler makes tough admission after brutal start vs. Cardinals

The New York Yankees’ first game after the MLB Trade Deadline saw one of their newest acquisitions make an impact. Luis Garcia Jr. hit his first home run as a Yankee while going two for four with two RBIs.

While Garcia was sparking the Yankees’ offense, Cam Schlittler was struggling on the mound. He had the second-shortest outing of his MLB career, lasting just three innings. After the game, he spoke about his performance, per Dan Martin and Brian Lewis.

“I take pride in having control and limiting those walks. Don’t really have an excuse for it,” Schlittler said. “So it wasn’t my night, and I got to be better there.”

Schlittler went three innings, giving up four hits and five walks. He did strike out six batters, but gave up a home run and four runs. His five walks were the most he had given up this year.

“I feel fine. [I] didn’t get in that rhythm,” Schlittler said. “I’ve just got to be better. Things have been a lot easier on the road. I feel like I’ve been dominant on the road and haven’t been able to do that here. And it’s frustrating. At some point, we’ve got to make an adjustment, and I’ve got to perform in front of the fans.”

The Yankees were down 4-0 after three innings, and Tim Hill would then give up two runs in the fourth inning. Still, the Yankees made a comeback. Austin Wells and Trent Grisham hit home runs in the fifth inning. Then, Ryan McMahon, Jose Caballero, and Luis Garcia all hit home runs in the seventh inning.

In the top of the eighth, Ryan Yarbrough would give up a triple to open the inning before Angel Chivilli gave up three home runs, two other hits, and a walk, leading to the Cardinals scoring seven runs in the inning and the Yankees losing 13-7.

After the game, Chivilli was optioned to Triple-A, along with Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez.

The Yankees are now 63-56 on the season, which places them 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. They still have control of the top Wild Card spot in the American League. The Yankees and Cardinals will continue their series on Tuesday night.
