Pirates’ Brandon Lowe doubles down on home runs in Keystone State clash vs. Phillies

Brandon Lowe was explosive with his at-bat appearances during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ clash with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Lowe is going through the ninth season of his MLB career, his first with the Pirates. He spent the last eight years with the Tampa Bay Rays, looking to start anew in Pittsburgh.

So far, he has been effective in the batting unit, especially when the opportunity for home runs arises. That was certainly the case in the series opener against Philadelphia, blasting a pair of home runs to right field in the third and fifth innings.

How Brandon Lowe, Pirates played against Phillies

Brandon Lowe enjoyed a solid night with his at-bats, but his efforts weren’t enough as the Pirates collapsed in the final innings against the Phillies.

Pittsburgh led 8-5 going into the final inning, having done well at keeping Philadelphia on its heels. However, the Phillies came alive with three runs to tie the game and force extra innings before delivering another trio of runs to take full control of the lead. This stunned Pittsburgh, who only managed to get one run back before Philadelphia put the game to bed.

The Pirates’ bullpen was unable to stop the Phillies’ rally in the last two innings of the night, conceding 14 hits and two home runs from Kyle Schwarber. Braxton Ashcraft started on the mound as he lasted for 6.2 innings, striking out five batters while allowing seven hits and four runs. Meanwhile, Dennis Santana obtained the loss after giving up four hits and two runs.

Pittsburgh fell to a 24-21 record on the season, holding the fourth spot in the NL Central Division standings. They are above the Cincinnati Reds while trailing the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Pirates will look to bounce back in Game 2 of their series against the Phillies. The contest takes place on May 16 as first pitch happens at 4:05 p.m. ET.
