Phillies’ Don Mattingly drops hilarious NSFW reaction to Bryce Harper hitting for cycle

The Philadelphia Phillies put on a clinic against the New York Mets on Saturday, earning a 15-3 victory. Leading the way was Bryce Harper, who hit for the 11th cycle in Phillies franchise history.

After the win, interim manager Don Mattingly was asked about Harper’s cycle. He kept things brutally honest about if he’d be able to match the feat during his playing days, via Luke Arcani of Crossing Broad.

“Never. S**t, are you kidding me? I had like 13 stolen bases in my life. Triples didn’t come very often. I turned triples into doubles,” Mattingly said.

Harper started his night off with a bang, as his first inning home run opened up the scoring. He would then add both a double and single in the third. Harper completed the cycle with a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning. His last at bat led to a groundout, but Harper and the Phillies’ damage at large had already been done.

The win moved Philadelphia to 41-35 on the season. While they’re still 7.5 games out of the NL East lead, the Phillies hold 1.5 game advantage over the competition for a Wild Card spot. It’s a far cry from there the franchise was pre-Mattingly.

Harper is doing everything in his power to help the Phillies succeed. After his cycle, he is now hitting .259 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIs and five stolen bases. He ranks second on the team, behind Kyle Schwarber, in both home runs and RBIs.

The Phillies know Harper won’t be hitting a cycle every night. But every time he is in the batter’s box, Philadelphia knows he can make a difference.
