Packers player in danger of losing starting job to rookie after 2026 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers were one of the quieter teams during the 2026 NFL Draft. Green Bay did not make a selection during the first round after using it on Micah Parsons just before the 2025 season. The Packers made a total of six selections, focusing on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully the addition of some reinforcements makes up for losing DC Jeff Hafley to the Dolphins.

If the Packers want to make the playoffs in 2026, they’ll need to get some big contributions from their rookie class.

Will any of Green Bay’s rookies compete for starting jobs during training camp? And who could make the biggest impact during their rookie season?

One Packers player stands out as being in the most danger of losing his job to a rookie after the draft.

Brandon Cisse is the future of the cornerback position in Green Bay

The Packers used their first pick of the draft on cornerback Brandon Cisse. He is a speedy cornerback out of South Carolina who ran a blazing 4.40-second 40-yard dash at the school’s pro day.

Multiple NFL talent evaluators have praised him as an excellent pick.

“Cisse is a speedy corner who could grow into a solid starter if able to tighten up his technique,” NFL.com’s Chad Reuter wrote following the draft.

Packers fans should be excited about adding Cisse because he should be a big part of their defense in the future. His official scouting report reveals that his traits could make him a star in the NFL one day.

“You draft him more for tomorrow’s tools and not for today’s tape. The bad reps are going to get corrected. I like his makeup and his speed,” one AFC national scout said, per NFL.com.

Cisse should make his presence felt in Green Bay sooner rather than later. Especially considering he is the team’s future at the cornerback position.

Veterans Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine are on expiring contracts, making their futures in Green bay unknown. Benjamin St-Juste and nickel Javon Bullard will be around through 2027, but either player could be a cap casualty next offseason if they struggle this fall.

In fact, Cisse is the only Packers cornerback who will still be on the roster during the 2028 offseason. The only exception is fellow rookie Domani Jackson.

Yes, the NFL is the “not for long” league so it can be dangerous to think too far ahead about the future. But that’s not exactly what we’re doing here.

Instead, it seems clear that strictly from a financial perspective, the Packers want Cisse to be their future at the cornerback position. Or at least an important part of that position group.

As such, it makes sense that Green Bay will give Cisse the opportunity to prove himself sooner rather than later.

Could that happen during his rookie season?

If the Packers decide to give Cisse some snaps as a rookie, they could be taken away from Valentine.

Green Bay will almost certainly want to see how Cisse can hold up playing boundary corner in the NFL. Not only is it the most valuable position for a cornerback, but it is also Green Bay’s biggest need on the entire roster.

Bullard should be taking care of snaps in the nickel as well, which only leaves the boundary for Cisse to cut his teeth.

Ultimately, giving Cisse more snaps becomes a decision of taking either Nixon or Valentine off the field. Neither player has been incredible in Green Bay, but Nixon is far more reliable and could work well alongside Cisse.

It will be fascinating to watch how the Packers hand out reps during training camp this summer. If Cisse performs well this summer, he could starting cutting into Valentine’s snaps as early as Week 1.

Hopefully Cisse lives up to the draft hype and becomes Green Bay’s new CB1 of the future.
